Who operates this site

World of Curious is published by World of Curious, operating as a sole trader in Australia. We handle personal information in line with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

The short version

This is a static website. There is no login, no account and no comment system. We never ask you for your name or your email address, anywhere, with one exception: the newsletter form, which is not currently open for signups.

We do not sell personal information and we do not build a profile of you. Third-party advertising does run on the site, and the section below sets out exactly what it does in your browser.

What we collect directly

Nothing goes to us. The pages are plain files and there is no server of ours receiving anything you do. What information is gathered is gathered by the third parties named below — an analytics provider and an advertising provider — and we see only their summary reports.

What is stored in your browser

Things are stored on your device by the providers named below. None of it is readable by us.

Analytics cookies. Google Analytics sets cookies and identifiers so it can tell a returning visit from a new one. See the analytics section below.
Advertising frequency. A record of which adverts you have already been shown, so the same one is not repeated at you.
Small conveniences. Where a page remembers something you chose — a collapsed section, for example — that preference stays on your device.

Analytics

Analytics is currently enabled.

We use Google Analytics 4, run by Google. It sets cookies and similar identifiers in your browser and sends information about your visit to Google, including on servers outside Australia.

What it records:

Which pages you view, in what order, and how long you stay.
How you arrived — a search, a link, a social post — and roughly where you are, at city level.
Your device type, screen size, browser and operating system.
A few specific things people do here: revealing a puzzle answer, and following a "next" or "related" link at the end of an article. We use those to work out which articles are worth writing more of.

We do not send Google your name, your email address or anything else that identifies you, because we never collect any of it. We see reports about groups of readers, not about you.

Google's own handling of this data is covered by their privacy policy. You can opt out across every site that uses Google Analytics with their browser add-on, or block it here with any content blocker. Nothing on this site stops working if you do.

Advertising

Advertising is currently enabled.

Adverts are supplied by TinyAdz, whose script is served from cdn.apitiny.net. It loads on article and section pages. It does not load on the policy pages you are reading now.

What it does in your browser:

Requests adverts from cdn.apitiny.net as you scroll towards a slot, rather than all at once when the page opens.
Stores a small record in your browser's local storage, under the key tinyadz_lastShownTimestamps, so the same advert is not shown to you repeatedly. It stays on your device and we cannot read it.
Loads a hidden frame from cdn.apitiny.net used to distinguish real readers from automated traffic.
Renders each advert in a frame belonging to the advertiser. Those frames are outside our control and may set their own cookies or identifiers under their own policies.

We are not given, and do not ask for, anything identifying you personally. We see aggregate counts only.

You can block all of it with a content blocker, or by blocking scripts for cdn.apitiny.net. The site is built to work without JavaScript and nothing you came here to read will stop working.

Hosting and server logs

The site is hosted by Netlify. Like every web host, it keeps standard server logs — including IP addresses, timestamps and requested URLs — for security, abuse prevention and operational purposes. We do not use those logs to identify individual readers.

The newsletter is not open for signups and no address can currently be submitted. If it opens, the form will name the provider that receives your address before you enter it, the address will be used only to send the newsletter, and every edition will carry a one-click unsubscribe.

Overseas disclosure

The hosting, analytics and advertising providers named above operate servers outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union. Using the site means your request is handled by those services.

Children

This is a general-audience entertainment publication. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anybody.

Your choices

You can block cookies and scripts in your browser, or use a content blocker. The site is built to work without JavaScript, so blocking things does not break the articles, the puzzles or the answers — all of it is in the page itself.

Access, correction and complaints

Because we hold no accounts and collect nothing directly, there is normally no personal information of yours for us to give you access to or correct. If you believe we hold something about you, or you want to complain about how this site handles privacy, email worldofcuriouscontact@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days.

If you are not satisfied with that response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected, the date at the top of this page changes with it.
