There Is One 8 Hidden Among the 3s. How Fast Can You Find It?
A grid of repeated characters with exactly one impostor at known coordinates. Easy to describe, considerably harder to do than it sounds.
This is the simplest puzzle format there is, and one of the most effective. A grid full of one character, with a single different character hidden somewhere in it.
It works because of a well-documented quirk in how visual search operates. When the target and the distractors share most of their features — the curves of an 8 and a 3 are almost the same strokes — your eye cannot find it in a single glance. It has to check each item, more or less one at a time.
Change the target to something that differs by a single obvious feature, such as a red character among black ones, and the search becomes almost instant regardless of how many characters there are. That difference between the two kinds of search is one of the more robust findings in the study of visual attention.
What that means in practice
It means the honest advice is not “relax and let it come to you”. It is the opposite: give yourself a route and follow it.
Read the grid like a page, one row at a time, at a steady pace. It feels slower and it is usually faster, because random scanning revisits the same squares repeatedly without you noticing.
If you would rather make it harder, cover the coordinate letters and numbers down the sides and work without them.
The answer
The grid below is generated with the target placed at coordinates chosen from a seed, so the answer exists in the data before the picture is drawn. A validator scans every cell of the stored grid, counts how many times the target appears, and refuses to publish unless the answer is exactly one.
