Five Cleaning Combinations to Never Make, and Why
The chemistry behind the warnings on the back of the bottle, explained plainly: what reacts with what, what it produces, and the one habit that avoids all of it.
The warnings on the back of cleaning products are printed small and phrased blandly, which is a shame, because the chemistry behind them is genuinely worth understanding.
None of this requires anything exotic. Every combination below can be made accidentally, in an ordinary bathroom, by somebody being thorough.
1. Bleach and any ammonia-based cleaner
This is the important one.
Household bleach contains sodium hypochlorite. Many glass cleaners, some multi-surface sprays and some floor cleaners contain ammonia. Put them together and the reaction produces chloramine vapours.
Chloramines irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. At low concentrations in a ventilated room you get a sharp smell and streaming eyes. In a small, closed bathroom with both products in use, concentrations can get high enough to cause serious breathing difficulty.
The practical risk is not somebody deliberately mixing a bottle of each. It is somebody cleaning a toilet with a bleach product, getting no result, and then spraying a different cleaner into the same bowl.
2. Bleach and any acid
That includes vinegar, limescale removers, some toilet cleaners and some tile cleaners.
Acid plus hypochlorite releases chlorine gas. Chlorine is more immediately aggressive than chloramine and is dangerous at low concentrations.
This combination is particularly easy to make by accident, because descaling products and bleach products often live under the same sink and are used in the same places — kettles, toilets, shower trays.
3. Bleach and rubbing alcohol
Less commonly discussed, and worth knowing. Sodium hypochlorite reacting with alcohols can form chloroform and other chlorinated compounds. Some hand sanitisers are largely alcohol, which is the realistic route to making this by accident.
4. Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar, stored mixed
Used one after the other on a surface, with a rinse in between, these are both useful. Combined and kept in a bottle, they form peracetic acid, which is corrosive and irritating.
The rule with these two is sequence and rinsing, never premixing for storage.
5. Two different drain unblockers
Drain products vary enormously: some are strongly alkaline, some are strongly acidic, some are oxidising. Pouring a second one down a blocked drain because the first did not work is combining unknown chemistry inside a confined pipe, with your face over the opening.

If one product does not clear a blockage, flush thoroughly with water and use a mechanical method, or call somebody.
The habit that avoids all of this
One product at a time. Rinse in between. Ventilate.
That single habit removes every risk on this page, and it costs nothing except a few minutes. It also happens to clean better, because most cleaning products need contact time to work, and layering a second product on top of the first usually just dilutes both.
Two other things worth knowing
More is not stronger. Most cleaning products are formulated to work at a particular dilution. Using them neat often reduces effectiveness as well as increasing the fumes.
The smell is not the warning system. Some hazardous combinations produce a strong smell immediately, which at least prompts people to leave. Others do not. Never treat “I cannot smell anything” as confirmation that a mixture is safe.
