Ten Everyday Questions With Surprisingly Good Answers
Why metal feels colder than wood, why the sky changes colour, why ice is slippery and six more. Plain explanations, including where the honest answer is that it is complicated.
Household questions usually have a clean answer that nobody ever gave you. Here are ten of them, with an honest note where the answer is less settled than people assume.
Why does metal feel colder than wood at the same temperature?
Because you are not sensing temperature, you are sensing heat flow.
Metal conducts heat away from your skin far faster than wood does, so your hand loses warmth quickly and the nerves report cold. A wooden spoon and a metal spoon in the same drawer are the same temperature; only one of them can take heat out of your fingers at speed.
The same effect works in reverse in a hot car. The metal buckle and the fabric seat are at the same temperature, and only one of them will burn you.

Why is the sky blue, and red at sunset?
Sunlight contains all visible wavelengths. Air molecules scatter short wavelengths — blue and violet — far more strongly than long ones. Looking at the sky away from the sun, you are seeing scattered light, which is therefore predominantly blue. Our eyes are also less sensitive to violet, which is why it does not look purple.
At sunset the light travels through much more atmosphere to reach you, so most of the blue has been scattered out of the direct beam before it arrives, leaving the reds and oranges.
Why does the moon look bigger near the horizon?
It does not. Photograph it and measure: it is the same size.

The effect is perceptual, it has been discussed for over a thousand years, and it is still not fully explained. Most accounts involve the horizon providing distance cues — trees, buildings, hills — that the empty sky does not.
Why is ice slippery?
The old explanation, that pressure melts a thin film of water, does not survive the numbers: the pressure from a person standing is nowhere near enough.
Current understanding centres on a thin, disordered, liquid-like layer that exists on the surface of ice even well below freezing, supplemented by frictional heating when something slides. It is an active area of research and the details are still debated.

Why does cutting onions make you cry?
Damaging the cells releases enzymes that produce a volatile sulphur compound. That compound reaches your eyes, reacts with moisture and forms a mild irritant, and your eyes produce tears to flush it out.
Chilling the onion slows the reaction. A sharp knife crushes fewer cells. Both help; neither stops it entirely.

Why does bread go stale, and why does it come back in the oven?
Staling is largely not about drying out. It is a process called starch retrogradation, in which starch molecules that were disordered during baking gradually rearrange into a more ordered, crystalline structure, making the crumb firm.
Heating reverses much of that rearrangement temporarily, which is why a stale loaf freshens in the oven and then goes stale again faster afterwards. Refrigeration accelerates staling, which is why bread does better in a bread bin or the freezer than in the fridge.
Why does a fridge make things cold?
It moves heat rather than creating cold. A refrigerant is compressed, which heats it; it releases that heat through coils on the outside; it is then allowed to expand, which cools it dramatically; and it absorbs heat from inside the cabinet.

The back of a fridge is warm for exactly this reason, and it is why leaving the door open heats a room rather than cooling it.
Why do your ears pop?
The middle ear is a sealed cavity connected to the throat by a narrow tube. When outside pressure changes quickly, the pressure inside does not, and the eardrum is pushed out of position. Swallowing or yawning opens the tube and equalises it, which is the pop.
Why does hot water sometimes sound different from cold water?
Pouring hot water produces a noticeably different pitch. The main factors are viscosity, which is lower in hot water, and the behaviour of dissolved gases and bubbles, which changes the acoustics of the pour. It is a genuinely audible difference and most people can identify it blind.

Why does a mirror reverse left and right but not up and down?
It does not reverse either. A mirror reverses front and back — the axis pointing towards it.
The confusion arises because we describe the reflection as a person, and a person facing us would have had to turn around, which is the operation that swaps left and right. The mirror is not doing that; you are, in your description of it.
